Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman
Marziyeh Afkham said in her weekly press conference on Tuesday that
President Hassan Rouhani coordinates the proceedings of the nuclear
talks with the Leader.
The Islamic Republic and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, Russia, France and the United States - plus Germany held two days of negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear energy program behind closed doors in Geneva on October 15-16.
The two sides have agreed to meet again in Geneva on November 7-8.
Afkham also stated that Iran’s Supreme Council of National Security (SCNS) was also informed of the process of the negotiations.
Geneva 2 talks
Commenting on the possibility of Iran’s participation at the upcoming Geneva conference on the crisis in Syria, Afkham said Tehran has received no invitation so far.
She added that Iran seeks the resolution of the crisis in Syria through a political approach.
Afkham, however, said Tehran will not accept any pre-conditions for participating in the Geneva 2 conference.
On October 7, US State Department Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Harf said Washington would agree to Iran’s participation in the conference if Tehran approved the Geneva Communiqué, which is aimed at providing an outline for ending the turmoil in Syria.
The Geneva event is likely to be held late November.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson also said UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will visit Iran next week to hold talks over the Syrian issue.
Iran-UK diplomatic exchange
Responding to a question on the appointment of non-resident charge d’affaires for Iran and the UK, Afkham said the two charge d’affaires are to be nominated within the next eight days.
She added that the two diplomats would not constantly remain in the other country, adding that as soon as their missions begin, the embassies of both countries will reopen.
According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, the agreement on appointing the two non-resident diplomats came during the negotiations between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and UK Foreign Secretary William Hague on the sidelines of the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly in September.
Iran-Canada relations
On the status of the relations between Iran and Canada, Afkham said the Kingdom of Oman has been chosen to represent the interests of Iran in Canada, and that the Italian government has been selected to represent the interests of Canada in Iran.
Considering the fact that the political relations between the Islamic Republic and Canada remain unclear, a number of notes have been exchanged between the two country’s permanent representatives at the UN in an effort to simplify consular affairs in Tehran and Ottawa, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated.
