"France will not tolerate nuclear proliferation," Hollande said upon his arrival in Israel on Sunday on a three-day visit which will be topped by Iran’s nuclear issue ahead of next week’s talks between Tehran and six major world powers in Geneva.
"As long as we are not certain that Iran has decided to give up on nuclear weapons, we will continue with all our demands and with sanctions," the French president said, adding, "France considers nuclear proliferation to be a menace, a danger, and in Iran particularly a menace to Israel, to the region and clearly a menace to the entire world."
Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council -- the United States, China, Russia, France and Britain -- plus Germany did not reach a deal in the Swiss city of Geneva over Tehran’s nuclear energy program in their latest round of talks, but stressed that significant progress had been made and expressed optimism about the prospect of achieving a deal.
France has been one of the main reasons behind the failure of the six major powers involved in nuclear negotiations with Iran to reach a possible nuclear agreement with Tehran.
On November 9, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said “Israel’s concerns” must be taken into consideration in the course of the negotiations.
Israel is widely believed to be the sole possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, with estimated 200-400 nuclear warheads.
The Israeli regime, which rejects all international nuclear regulatory agreements, particularly the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), maintains a policy of deliberate ambiguity over its nuclear activities and refuses to allow its nuclear facilities to come under international regulatory inspections.
Iran, which is a signatory to the NPT, has repeatedly emphasized that its nuclear energy program is only for peaceful purposes and that the country does not need nuclear weapons.
